FAQ

Powder Metallurgy FAQ

Common questions about PM parts, powder metallurgy process, and our manufacturing capabilities

What is powder metallurgy and how does it work?
Powder metallurgy (PM) is a near-net-shape manufacturing process that produces metal parts from metal powders. The process involves four key steps: (1) Powder production — metal powders are created through atomization; (2) Blending — powders are mixed with lubricants and binders; (3) Compaction — powders are pressed in precision dies at 400–800 MPa to form green compacts; (4) Sintering — compacts are heated in a controlled atmosphere at temperatures below the melting point (typically 1120°C for iron-based alloys), bonding particles into solid, dense components. Read our guides on the sintering process in powder metallurgy and what is sintering for step-by-step detail.
Is powder metallurgy cheaper than CNC machining?
For high-volume production (typically 1,000+ pieces), powder metallurgy is significantly more cost-effective than CNC machining. PM achieves 95%+ material utilization vs. CNC's 50% waste, and production rates of 1,800 parts/hour vs. CNC's 20-60 parts/hour. While PM requires initial tooling investment ($5,000-$30,000), the per-part cost becomes 15-25% lower than CNC at scale. However, for prototypes or low volumes (<50 units), CNC machining is more economical due to no tooling costs. PM also requires 40-50% less energy than CNC machining.
What tolerances can powder metallurgy achieve?
Standard sintered parts achieve IT8-9 tolerances (+/-0.075 mm for dimensions 0-25mm). After sizing/secondary operations, PM parts can reach IT5-7 precision (+/-0.015 mm for 0-25mm). For reference, a 25mm diameter part after sizing achieves 12.5-20 um tolerance. Our facility specializes in GB9 grade gears (equivalent to DIN 7-8), which is 2 grades higher than the standard GB11. This precision is achieved through advanced KISSsoft German gear design software and precision sizing equipment ranging from 15T to 80T.
What are the main applications of PM parts?
PM parts are widely used across industries: (1) Automotive - engine components (connecting rods, VVT parts, cam lobes), transmission gears, differential components, brake system parts, and oil pump rotors; (2) Power Tools - high-torque gearboxes, planetary gears, bevel gears for drills and screwdrivers; (3) Industrial Equipment - robot components, hydraulic pump parts, bearings and bushings; (4) Appliances - washing machine gears, refrigerator compressor parts; (5) Locks - precision lock cylinders and tumblers. The automotive industry accounts for 60-80% of PM part consumption globally.
What materials are used in powder metallurgy?
Common PM materials include: (1) Iron-based - unalloyed iron (F-0000), carbon steels (F-0005, F-0008), iron-copper alloys (FC-0205, FC-0208); (2) Steel alloys - nickel steels (FN-0200 series), sinter-hardening steels for high-wear applications; (3) Stainless steel - 300 and 400 series for corrosion resistance; (4) Copper alloys - bronze and brass for bearings and electrical components; (5) Aluminum - for lightweight automotive parts; (6) Soft magnetic composites - for electric motor components. We primarily work with iron-based and copper-based materials compliant with MPIF 35 and DIN 30910 standards.
How strong are powder metallurgy parts?
PM parts achieve strength comparable to wrought materials when properly processed. Sintered steel parts typically reach 200-400 MPa tensile strength, while sinter-hardened steels can achieve 500-800 MPa. Powder-forged connecting rods can match forged steel strength. Density plays a key role - standard PM parts achieve 6.6-6.9 g/cm3 density (90-93% theoretical), while double-pressing/double-sintering or copper infiltration can increase density to 7.2+ g/cm3. Heat treatment, sizing, and surface treatments like steam treatment further enhance hardness and wear resistance. Our ISO 9001 certification ensures consistent mechanical properties for automotive applications.
Why choose your powder metallurgy company?
We offer distinct advantages: (1) 15+ years PM experience since 2008 with 22 patents (6 invention patents); (2) Large-scale capacity — 36 press machines (6T–400T), 4 sintering lines, 2,600T annual material capacity; (3) Superior precision — GB9 gear grade vs. industry standard GB11, using KISSsoft German design software; (4) Automotive-grade quality — ISO 9001 certified, Kia SQ supplier certified; (5) Trusted by major brands — Dongcheng, Positec, Stihl, Kia Motors; (6) Full-service capabilities — pressing, sintering, sizing, CNC machining, heat treatment, surface treatment; (7) Competitive pricing with free mold design for custom parts.
