PM Fastener Components | Powder Metallurgy Bolts, Nuts & Washers

Powder metallurgy fastener components including structural bolts, locking nuts, specialty washers, and custom fastening solutions.

Powder Metallurgy Fasteners

Powder metallurgy enables the production of complex fastener geometries with integrated features, specialized materials, and controlled properties. While traditional cold-headed fasteners dominate the market, PM fasteners excel in niche applications requiring unique shapes, materials, or property combinations.

Why PM for Fasteners?

Key Advantages:

  • Complex Geometries: Integrated features (flanges, locking tabs, hex heads)
  • Specialty Materials: Stainless steel, titanium, exotic alloys
  • Net-Shape Manufacturing: Minimal machining required
  • Controlled Properties: Tailored strength and hardness
  • Small-to-Medium Sizes: Best for M3-M16 range

Applications:

  • Automotive structural fasteners
  • Aerospace self-locking nuts
  • Electronic assembly hardware
  • Specialty industrial fasteners
  • Medical device fasteners

Common PM Fastener Types

1. Self-Locking Nuts

Design Features:

  • Integrated locking elements (distorted threads, nylon inserts)
  • Flanged bases for load distribution
  • Material: Steel, stainless steel, brass

Advantages:

  • Complex geometries (elliptical thread forms)
  • Consistent locking torque
  • Cost-effective at medium volumes (>25,000 units)

2. Flanged Fasteners

Bolts and Screws:

  • Integrated flange (washer-like base)
  • Reduces need for separate washers
  • Material: FC-0208, 316L SS

Applications:

  • Automotive body assembly
  • Appliance manufacturing
  • Electrical connections

3. Specialty Washers

Wave Washers:

  • Complex 3D geometry (difficult to stamp)
  • Spring action for load distribution
  • Material: Stainless steel, spring steel

Locking Washers:

  • Integrated locking tabs
  • Tooth patterns for grip
  • Material: Hardened steel

4. Structural Fasteners

High-Strength Bolts:

  • Material: Alloy steel (FL-4405, FN-0405)
  • Heat-treated: 8.8-10.9 grade equivalent
  • Applications: Automotive chassis, industrial equipment

Precision:

  • Thread quality: 6g tolerance class
  • Head dimensions: +/-0.10mm
  • Length: +/-0.30mm

Material Selection

Common Fastener Materials

Strength Classes

ISO 898-1 Equivalent:

  • Grade 4.6: FC-0208 (as-sintered or steam-treated)
  • Grade 8.8: FN-0405 (quench & temper)
  • Grade 10.9: FL-4405 (quench & temper)
  • Grade 12.9: High-density alloy steels (heat-treated)

Manufacturing Process

1. Powder Compaction

  • Pressure: 500-800 MPa
  • Thread forms: Rolled after sintering (best quality) or pressed (lower strength)
  • Head geometry: Hex, socket, Torx formed directly

2. Sintering

  • Steel: 1120-1150°C
  • Stainless: 1260-1300°C
  • Atmosphere: Protective (prevent oxidation)

3. Thread Rolling

  • Cold rolling: Increases thread strength 30-50%
  • Surface hardness improvement
  • Better fatigue resistance than cut threads

4. Heat Treatment

  • Quench & Temper: Achieve strength grades
  • Carburizing: Surface hardening (if needed)
  • Stress relief: Minimize distortion

5. Surface Treatment

  • Zinc plating: Corrosion protection (most common)
  • Phosphate coating: Lubricity, mild corrosion protection
  • Geomet/Dacromet: High-performance coating (automotive)

Design Considerations

Thread Design

  • Minimum Thread Size: M3 (smaller possible but challenging)
  • Maximum Thread Size: M20 (larger sizes less common in PM)
  • Thread Quality: 6g tolerance (rolled threads), 7g (pressed threads)

Head Geometry

  • Hex Heads: M3-M16 common
  • Socket Heads: M4-M12 typical
  • Flanged Heads: Integrated washer (load distribution)

Tolerances

  • As-Sintered: +/-0.15-0.30mm
  • After Sizing: +/-0.05-0.10mm
  • Threads (Rolled): 6g tolerance class

Performance Requirements

Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile Strength: 400-1200 MPa (depending on grade)
  • Proof Load: 80% of tensile strength
  • Hardness: Per ISO 898-1 requirements

Thread Performance

  • Stripping Strength: >tensile strength of bolt
  • Fatigue Strength: 30-50% of tensile strength
  • Torsional Strength: Resist head twist-off during installation

Cost Analysis

Tooling Investment:

  • Simple nut/washer: $8,000-15,000
  • Complex flanged bolt: $20,000-40,000

Production Costs (Example: M8 Flanged Bolt):

  • Material: $0.15
  • Compaction: $0.08
  • Sintering: $0.10
  • Thread rolling: $0.05
  • Heat treatment: $0.12
  • Plating: $0.08
  • Total: $0.58 vs. $0.85 for cold-headed + machined flange

Break-Even: Typically 10,000-25,000 units
